Psychiatry is the study of mental disorders and their diagnosis, management and prevention. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have qualified in psychiatry. They also have extensive experience in treating depression, anxiety problems, obsessive compulsive disorder and alcohol misuse.

Professional profile

I have expertise in the assessment and management of various psychiatric disorders. They include psychotic and mood disorders, neurotic, trauma and stress-related and somatoform disorders (particularly in relation to trauma), personality disorders and factitious disorder (Munchausen Syndrome). I am trained in the various risk assessment tools relating to risk of harm to others arising from various psychiatric disorders including neuropsychiatric cases. My special interests in neuropsychiatry include neurocognitive and neuro-behavioral disorders due to a traumatic brain injury (TBI), epilepsy and Non-Epileptic Attack Disorders (NEAD). I am also trained in Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and have a good understanding in assessment and management of neurodevelopmental disorders (including ADHD).

I am skilled in the field of psychopharmacology relating to various psychiatric disorders and requesting the relevant investigations. I am a resourceful and patient centered clinician. I employ a strong recovery focused approach in my management of patients to imbue hope and foster independence.

Medico-legal experience

I have extensive experience in medico-legal work particularly in relationship to forensic and civil cases. I have provided expert witness opinion to magistrate and crown courts, crown prosecution service, solicitors and first tier tribunal hearings. I supervise the medico legal work of trainee doctors aspiring to be consultants.

I have attended the Bond Solon expert witness courses on clinical negligence, civil procedures rules and criminal law and procedure. I provide opinion on mental capacity cases, personal injury case (particularly following sexual abuse) and clinical negligence cases. My claimant (90%): defendant (10%) ratio. I have experience of expert witness discussions and giving evidence in court. I regularly attend updates and training in medico-legal courses as part of my continuous professional development (CPD). My last update was with Bond Solon’s legal update for expert witness on 26 April 2020.

Dr Muhammad Gul is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist working for Midlands Partnership Foundation NHS Trust since 2012. He completed his General Psychiatry Training from St-Marys General Psychiatry Training Scheme London.  He then went for higher training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in the same training scheme, linked with Imperial College London. During his training he obtained Postgraduate Certificate in University Learning & Teaching from Imperial College London.  He also has a Master in Research in Psychiatry, awarded by University College London.  He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Keele University and teaches medical students. He is also Fellow of Higher Education Academy England and hold Masters in Medical Education from Keele University England.

He is also Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (F.R.C.Psych). Dr Gul is Chair for West Midlands Division of Royal College of Psychiatrists, representing more than 1200 Consultant Psychiatrists.

Dr Muhammad Gul is also an Associate Medical Director and Director of Medical Education for Midlands Partnership Foundation NHS Trust.

His area of clinical interests are neurodevelopmental disorders include Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Complex Trauma.

He has an interest in service development and has taken a lead on many local and regional initiatives. He has been working closely with International Organisation, providing training, working on collaborative projects and service developments. Dr. Gul has been active in research and has been author of  research articles. He is an International Speaker and has delivered his presentation in many parts of the World.

Memory assessment service with MRI scan and prescribing for Dementia

Dr Sharma runs a comprehensive memory assessment service which includes an initial assessment, full investigations including an MRI scan, neuro-psychometric testing where indicated and appropriate psychological counselling for the patient and their family.

Medication is prescribed, where appropriate, for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and difficult behaviours associated with it (and other dementias) and is monitored with regular follow-up appointments providing full and comprehensive management of complex psychological and behavioural problems associated with dementia.

Psychiatric assessment

He also has a special interest in treatment resistant anxiety and depression illnesses. His  psychiatric assessments include:

  • Assessment for referring for psychotherapy/counselling and other specialist psychological interventions while overseeing the progress of patients.
  • Assessment of mental capacity for court of protection, power of attorney and making Wills.
  • Assessment of post traumatic stress disorder and providing medico legal reports to the court.
  • Assessment of alcohol use disorders.

Dr Sharma is known for his excellence “bedside” manners and a professionals relaxed approach for which he has received commendations from patients and relatives. He is of Indian origin and has had his postgraduate specialisation in psychiatry from UK. He is available for consulting in the evenings, Saturday mornings in clinic or home visits.

Professional profile

He qualified as a doctor in 1997 and completed his higher specialist training in general adult psychiatry with the West Midlands Deanery. He became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2007. He has worked in community mental health teams around the midlands and nationally and has expertise in a range of mental health conditions e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar and psychotic disorders.

He completed his postgraduate degree in clinical neuropsychiatry from the University of Birmingham with distinction, following which he took up a full time consultant post in the neuropsychiatry department at The Barberry.

The Barberry centre is a renowned internationally for cutting edge research in psychiatry.

For many years he has had a keen interest in the causes and management of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He has received training in adult ADHD from the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings college, London.

He has contributed to research into tourettes syndrome and published articles in major journals in the field of psychiatry and neurology.
