He also has an interest in laparoscopic surgery (gallbladders, groin hernias and appendicectomy), hernia repair (inguinal, femoral, incisional), and endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid).
He studied at Cambridge University (Emmanuel College) from 1982 to 1985 and his medical training at Oxford University (Magdalen College) from 1985 to 1988.
He moved back to Birmingham in 1988 and all of his subsequent training was based in the West Midlands. He taught anatomy at the University of Birmingham for a year. He then passed his FRCS examinations and entered research for 18 months at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The subject of his MD thesis was ‘Ischaemia-reperfusion injury in intermittent claudication’. This studied the possible harmful effect of walking in patients with arterial disease of their legs (causing a tightness in the calf after walking for a certain distance).
In 1998 he passed the final FRCS examination and was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Good Hope Hospital in October 1999.
He lives in Sutton Coldfield and is married to a local GP. They have three children who occupy most of his spare time but he is interested in reading (mainly science fiction), archery and sailing. He completed building a Westfield kit car to fulfil his love of sports cars.
