Banding of haemorrhoids
What are haemorrhoids?
Haemorrhoids are enlarged, dilated blood vessels in the anus. This procedure is performed to remove painful, swollen haemorrhoids which bleed on defaecation. Banding cuts off the blood supply causing the haemorrhoids to shrink and fall off.
Procedure
This procedure takes approx 10 minutes depending on how many haemorrhoids are being treated. No anaesthetic is required.
An instrument is inserted into the rectum, and using banding equipment a rubber band is placed around the haemorrhoid. Some discomfort may be experienced during the procedure and may last for up to 48 hours.
Following procedure
Common risks which may occur are: bleeding and pain.
Less common risks are: difficulty passing urine, and constipation.
The rubber band cuts off the blood supply to the haemorrhoid. The band and the haemorrhoid will fall off in 4 – 5 days. Some bleeding should be expected and the wound normally heals in 1-2 weeks.

Minimal discomfort may occur however very rarely can be more significant. - Driving:
Usually immediately after procedure. - Work:
This should not be affected unless you spend a long period of time sat in one position.
Rigid Sigmoidoscopy
What is a sigmoidoscopy?
This is a diagnostic procedure to examine the rectum to check for polyps, early signs of cancer, and causes of bleeding or inflammation.
Procedure
A tube called a sigmoidoscope is inserted into the rectum, to allow the consultant to examine the lining of the bowel. A small amount of air is blown into the rectum to distend it slightly to enable easier access and visibility.
Mild temporary discomfort may be experienced along with the feeling of wanting to pass wind, this is perfectly normal.
Following procedure
The consultant will discuss any findings and any necessary further treatment.
