Mr Marcus Green

Marcus Green is a consultant at the BMI Priory Hospital in Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He has a special interest in knee and shoulder pathology. He performs both arthroplasty (joint replacement) and arthroscopy (key hole surgery) on both these areas of the body.

Marcus qualified from Birmingham University in 1986 with first class BSc in pathology and was awarded the Faculty of Engineering prize for his research into blood flow in sickle cell anaemia. He received his medical degree in 1987 with honours in Pathology.

Having done house jobs in Birmingham he taught anatomy at Bristol University while sitting his initial surgical exams and returned to jobs in Birmingham gaining his FRCS in 1991. He was appointed as an orthopaedic registrar on the West Midlands training rotation and subsequently gained his completion of training (FRCS Tr and Orth) in 1998. He was the first lecturer to be appointed between the University of Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital before being appointed to a consultants post in 1999, split between University Hospital Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Prior to his consultant appointment he had a significant interest in the emergency treatment of casualties in the pre-hospital environment and has been cited by the West Midlands Fire Service and received the queens jubilee medal for his work in the prehospital environment

Along with Duncan Learmonth and Samir Massoud he was one of the co-founders in 2004 of the Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic based at the Priory Hospital, a private clinic dedicated to treating patients with problems of the knee and shoulder.

He performs between 150 and 200 joint replacements of knee or shoulder each year including partial knee replacements and shoulder resurfacing. He performs significant quantities of arthroscopic surgery again of the knee and shoulder including rotator cuff repairs of the shoulder and ligament reconstruction of the knee.

In his spare time he is a keen hot air balloon pilot spending the majority of his time flying competitively. He has represented Great Britain in international championships around the globe both at World and European championships. He has flown in almost all of continental Europe, as well as in Japan on numerous occasions.
